What is Orthodontics?

We believe that orthodontics is about so much more than just straightening teeth! Your smile is with you for life. It not only enhances your health and appearance, it also adds self-esteem and confidence.

Orthodontics is the oldest specialist branch of dentistry, and deals with the diagnosis and treatment of problems associated with the growth and alignment of teeth and jaws. Orthodontic treatment involves the design and use of corrective appliances, such as braces, plates, headgears and functional appliances, which bring the teeth and jaws into an improved alignment.

An orthodontist is a specialist who has completed a minimum of 5 years study at university to first obtain their general dentist qualifications. Those that have excelled can undertake a further two years of practice, study and examinations to be eligible to enter specialist programs. If accepted, they will complete a further 3 years full time study in orthodontics to obtain their specialist status.

No Referral Required

A referral from either a Medical or General Dental practitioner is not required for Specialist Orthodontists as we are not covered by Medicare.

It is important however, that you continue to see your General Dentist for regular check ups and preventive care while under any care from an orthodontist.

Australian Society of Orthodontists

All our Specialist Orthodontists are members of the Australian Society of Orthodontists. This is the only recognised professional association for Orthodontists in Australia. The Australian Society of Orthodontists is in charge of the vetting of the quality of all orthodontic education in specialist training within Australia and provides funding and teaching personnel for these training programs. Membership of the Australian Society of Orthodontists is the only way that the public can tell if someone carrying out orthodontics is appropriately trained and qualified.
