Treatment Options - Early Intervention
The screening of children for the early diagnosis and detection of any abnormalities can be of huge benefit to minimise and/or prevent any future problems. It will also identify the optimal time for any future orthodontic care.
Therefore, we recommend that all children should be assessed by their general dentist by the age of 7 years, and if either you or the dentist has any concerns, we recommend that a specialist orthodontic consultation be sought.
For parents' peace of mind, an early assessment can be undertaken. Treatment may often not begin at this age, however, the child’s growth and development can be recorded and monitored until the appropriate time for the commencement of the treatment.
The Benefits of Early Treatment
For those children where there is a clear indication for early intervention, this presents the opportunity to:
- Correct harmful oral habits
- Improve aesthetics and self esteem
- Simplify or shorten treatment time for later corrective orthodontics
- Improve some speech problems
- Preserve or gain space for permanent teeth
- Influence jaw growth in a positive manner
